Mark

Busy in here today! Let's hope the bacon's better than yesterday's!

John

Bacon? Is that all you can think about Mark?! I mean I know it's some sort of goal, but really…

Mark

Oh here we go again! Not you too. All this talk about goals!

John

I know they went on a little bit but they've got some important stuff to say. And you can't go through life thinking about nothing but food!

Mark

It's not all I think about… there are other important things. Like my next holiday…

John

Well it seems to me that that stuff they were promoting could do you some good - it's only my opinion mind but… he was right when he said you've got time on your hands.

Mark

Do you think so?

John

Too right. Believe you me, if I was to start now I wouldn't go leaving it till my age, that's for sure.

Mark

You're still talking riddles. Here comes the boss…

Louise

Is there room for me there? So, what did you think to that roadshow team then? I thought they were inspired. Quite right too, you need a goal to know where you're headed and to know if you've got there. Mind you, I never thought about applying it to money before, just my career!

Mark

Well my goal is to get to the end of the day, get to the weekend, buy a beer… and then another. Oh - and my other goal is not to take life too seriously. I'll wait until I'm as old as you two for that!

John

Yeah well that's the trouble, you never feel old enough. Now, back in my day…

Mark

Here we go Louise…

John

No, back in my day, we didn't have the luxuries you do.

Mark

'We were so poor, we had to live in a cardboard box…'

Louise

Let him finish Mark!

John

Poorer maybe but that's not what I meant. We had to join a company pension scheme if they'd got one, so what this meant was that in all my jobs I've paid into some sort of pension. Now, maybe I didn't appreciate it at the time, you know, all those years of payments - but I'll tell you what, there's no way I could save that much up again!

Mark

Aye, I suppose.

Louise

When I retire I want to go off on cruises - see the world. And then maybe take up golf and - don't laugh - but I've always fancied being a goldsmith so I could make beautiful jewellery…

John

Fancy eh?! So why don't you do all that stuff now then?

Louise

You're joking aren't you?! Have you any idea how much that sort of stuff costs?! There's no way I could afford to do it now!

Mark

So what're you gonna do? Marry a rich man? Win the lottery?

Louise

Something like that'd be good! I'd not really thought about it. I mean, I just suppose I thought it was the kind of thing you do when you retire. I hadn't thought about paying for it.

John

Well, there's the problem.

Mark

Sorry you've lost me.

John

Well look, don't take this the wrong way, but I mean office managers like you, you're not exactly poor are you? So all that fancy stuff, well, it's going to cost just as much when you retire. And you've got less to spend too.

Louise

I suppose I will have, won't I?

John

I mean, I should know - I wanted to retire a couple of years ago until I saw what my actual income would be… I wish I'd been on one of these courses years ago. It would've given me a kick start, and then I'd've understood, and I'd've been able to sit down and work something out.

Louise

So what you're saying is, my jewellery and my golf and cruises… they're my goals.

John

Exactly. My trouble was I was just like him, Sunny Jim over there. 'Tomorrow never comes'. Well, hey, Sunny Jim, it does…

Mark

I do have goals. I just don't think about them that much. Time for a coffee?
