Step 03 is the half-way point of Working Money. By the end of this step, you’ll know whether you're already on target to reach your goal so that you can look at the options available to you before making your plan.

Why do we need to check our target Bob?

Bob

Well, if you’ve done both Steps 01 and 02, you’ll know what your goal is for your money and you’ll have a good idea of where your money goes each month. The next part is to look at whether you are anywhere near achieving that goal.

Sarah

Well the fourth Step will go on and look at what options are available, won’t it? Shouldn’t we do that one first?

Bob

Yes, some people do look at the options before working out whether they are on target to reach their goal, but I think it’s sensible to see whether you’re already on target first.

Think about our journey again. We’ve had a look at where we are at the moment – we’ve reached Stevenage and it’s early afternoon. If we keep going as we are, it seems likely that we’ll make it to London by teatime. So it sounds like we’re doing well and we don’t need to change anything.

That’s why I like to see whether you are on target – or not – before worrying about which options are best for you.

Sarah

I can see that makes sense… and I suppose you might want to make sure by driving on fast roads, just to give yourself more chance of arriving on time?

Bob

You’re really getting the hang of this now, Sarah! Of course if you find out that you’re running late, then the sooner you find out the more chance you have of doing something about it.

Sarah

Thanks Bob. Speaking of running late, we need to go straight over to our colleagues, who’ve just had their third session at the roadshow.
